United States – India Educational Foundation (USIEF) has announced its annual competition for Fulbright-Nehru and other Fulbright fellowships for Indian citizens for the academic year 2021-22.

Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) Program for school teachers – Application deadline: March 16, 2020

The Fulbright TEA program is designed for full-time school teachers (6th to 12th grades) teaching English, English as a Foreign Language (EFL), Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, or Special Education at schools in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. This program provides selected teachers with a unique opportunity to develop greater expertise in their subject areas, enhance their teaching skills, and increase their knowledge about the United States.

It is a six-week non-degree, non-credit academic program at a U.S. university. The international participants will travel to the United States for a six-week professional development program in either January 2021 or September 2021. The program provides academic seminars on teaching methodologies and strategies, curriculum development, lesson planning, and instructional technology training. The program will also include a practicum of at least 40 hours with a U.S. partner teacher in a U.S. secondary school near the host university.

Fulbright-Nehru Specialist Program for Indian Institutions - Application Deadline:April 15, 2020


The Fulbright Specialist program provides an opportunity to Indian institutions of higher learning to invite U.S. scholars and professionals to their campus for a period of 2 weeks to 6 weeks, to draw on the expertise of U.S. scholars and professionals and develop linkages with American institutions.


USIEF will undertake the international airfare and honorarium to the Specialist. The host institution in India is responsible for the cost of housing, meals and any necessary, program-related, in-country transportation.


Eligible Institutions: Host institutions should be involved in university-level teaching or training, the expansion of partnerships between universities and specialized institutions, and the promotion of international and cross-institutional cooperation. Institutions that may be eligible to request a Fulbright Specialist include, but are not limited to:


- Institutions of higher education

- Government institutions (ministries or agencies, courts, parliamentary or congressional bodies)

- Cultural institutions (conservatories, museums, etc.)

- Non-governmental organizations including non-partisan, issue-centered institutions and think tanks

- Medical institutions (public health organizations, teaching hospitals, etc.)

Eligible fields include Agriculture; American (U.S.) Studies (the following specializations with a specific U.S. focus are eligible: art, art history, dance, history, literature, music, popular culture, religion, theater and women’s studies); Anthropology; Archaeology; Biology Education; Business Administration; Chemistry Education; Communications and Journalism; Computer Science and Information Technology; Economics; Education; Engineering Education; Environmental Science; Law; Library Science; Math Education; Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies; Physics Education; Political Science; Public Administration; Public/Global Health; Social Work; Sociology; Urban Planning.

Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships - Application Deadline: May 15, 2020

These fellowships are for outstanding students to pursue a master’s degree in the U.S. in the disciplines specified below. A prospective applicant must have a four-year bachelor's degree; or a completed master's degree or a full-time postgraduate diploma from a recognized Indian institution if the bachelor's degree is of less than four years' duration; and three years of full-time (paid) professional work experience relevant to the proposed field of study by the application deadline.

These are pre-doctoral level research fellowships for six to nine months in the U.S. for students who have registered for a Ph.D. at an Indian institution by September 1, 2019.

Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowships - Application Deadline: July 15, 2020

These fellowships are for faculty and research scholars who have obtained a Ph.D. or a Doctor of Medicine (DM) degree between July 16, 2016 and July 15, 2020, to pursue a postdoctoral research fellowship in the U.S. for 8 to 24 months. The applicant is required to upload his/her Ph.D. or DM degree/provisional certificate on the online application.

Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowships - Application Deadline: July 15, 2020


This fellowship is meant for faculty, professionals and senior researchers, and provides an opportunity to teach and/or conduct research at a U.S university for 4 to 9 months. The minimum length of the grant is four months and the maximum is six months. One can opt for the Flex award if they want to split the grant time into 2 parts – each part no less than 1 month and no more than 3 months.

Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators Seminar - Application Deadline: October 15, 2020


This is a two-week program in the U.S. in October 2021 for mid- to senior-level Indian college and university administrators who have at least two years of experience in international program development and management at their institutions. The applicant should have substantial responsibility for enhancing the international dimension of their institutions and must aim to build capacity of their faculty and students through international collaborations and exchange and innovative curricular design. A total of 12 Indian higher education administrators will be selected for this program which will include visits to U.S. universities/colleges, panel discussions and networking events, giving them an opportunity to learn about curriculum development, globalization of education, teaching methodologies and faculty/student exchanges.
